As part of our Washington Lunch & Learn Series and to keep local businesses abreast of labor regulations, the Chamber is hosting Ted Phelgar, Counselor for the U.S. Chamber’s Workforce Freedom Initiative.

Chamber members need to be aware of regulatory actions at a federal level which is why he will be sharing insight regarding activities of the Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board and discuss actions YOU can take to prepare for these significant changes in labor law.

The Department of Labor is actively enforcing its current policies and developing new regulations to impose on employers and these regulatory actions can have a significant impact on businesses without a lot of notoriety and then it is too late.

The National Labor Relations Board has returned to full strength for the first time in many years. With the Board’s quorum and the General Counsel’s independent authority firmly reestablished, the NLRB is prepared to impose several more agenda items on the business community, including the proposed Ambush Election rule. Moreover, the NLRB’s General Counsel is searching for cases involving use of employer e-mail systems, mandatory arbitration agreements and unilateral implementation of discipline, to rewrite those precedents through new case decisions.

As traditional union ranks have declined, organized labor is embracing the emerging worker center movement i.e. non-profit “charitable” organizations, usually formed as §501(c)(3)’s, that engage in traditional union activities, such as holding protests, negotiating for higher wages and benefits, raising grievances, all while being exempt from the laws regulating union behavior and that protect the rights of workers.

This program is designed to raise awareness of business leaders looming regulations and provide you with the tools to be effective advocates.
